Last year, a notification came up in the Steam client
"steam will stop working with windows 7 in 180 days"
Okay , so I either need to install windows 10 , or build a new computer
I'm still trying to pay off the house , so I don't want to spend three thousand dollars on a new computer
and I'm not interested in installing windows 10 if I don't have to
It was scheduled to stop working on December 31 , 2023
I kept stalling and procrastinating until the deadline
Normally , I reboot my computer every day
but I was worried what would happen to my Steam library when it stops working
So I left my computer and a game of Factorio running until today
When I got bored of Factorio and decided to close it down and reboot
and what happened ?
nothing
I just says "there are 0 days left"
but still opens and launches my games
I'm not sure what will happen when I try to purchase a new game
Nobody wants to touch me
I'm not allowed to touch others without permission
I don't have the ability to persuade others to let me touch them
I was playing games and watching youtube , when the second computer suddenly powered off
It tried to turn itself back on , but kept failing
So , I flipped the power switch and decided to worry about it later
Then I noticed my internet connection was gone
No power to the cable modem . . .
A power outage . . . great
but my main computer was still on and running
odd . . .
I powered it off just in case
Then I went around the house , checking the lights and appliances
What's odd about this house \ neighborhood is that the power never goes completely out
The lights turn on , but dimly
I think this is what you call a "brown out"
There's some electricity running , but not enough to power everything
Any LED lights were at full brightness , but incandecent bulbs were dim
I assume because the LEDs take less power to operate
The power came back on an hour later
I thought we wouldn't have any more power problems after they replaced all of the power poles in the neighborhood
I've been dreading this day
Daylight Savings Time started today
Four months of "normal" time , eight months of "off" time
I don't know who decides these things , but I'm pretty sure they're just prepping us to permanantly switch it to DST
I didn't really care about it too much , it was just another stupid thing people did to the calendar
What I recently discovered is that it's better to wake up naturally when it gets bright outside
instead of waking up in the dark because my alarm is buzzing
And I prefer it to get darker "earlier" because then the other humans will go to bed earlier , and I'll have more of the night to myself
[touch report]
two handshakes , one new hire , one user
Drove mom back to Muskegon
Picked her up from Annie's
Not an especially pleasant trip
She hadn't been back to her house in more than six months
It was even more unkempt than usual
On the drive my emotions were carefully neutral
but when I got there , I was immediately pissed off
I'd love to clean her house
but there is no way to do it properly with her in the way
Tommy rented me a hotel room in downtown Muskegon
It's fucking ridiculous that we have to stay in a hotel , because mom's huge house is filled with filth
I didn't even know Muskegon had a downtown area
I was going to go out and find a bar to drink at , but I ended up staying in the hotel room and sleeping
After having breakfast at a diner
Mom decided to stay at her house
I was not upset to have the drive back all to myself
I set the cruise control at 65 , and relaxed all the way home
Got a new work laptop
I am not at all happy with the design
The power button is with the other keys , so I keep hitting it instead of the delete key
There are no separate buttons on the mouse pad
There's no barrel power connector anymore , just two c-ports
The only improvement over the old computer is the screen has a higher resolution
For the past couple of days , I've been training a new hire to be a field technician
but this morning I discover he decided to not take the job anymore
The only person that has ever said "I love you , Jeremy"
is me , when I'm by myself and I do something embarassingly silly
and immediately followed by "you're an idiot"
